Just Buy the Damn Album!
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2018 14:20Sometimes I feel like such an asshole.
So I listen to Spotify a lot. I mean, a lot. Music is what I need to write, if only to shut up my inner editor and self doubt so I can get SOMETHING on the page. Otherwise I'll just sit there being scared so I procrastinate and of course, nothing gets written. And since I do strive to write a lot every day (800 words sometimes takes me two hours, sometimes takes me all day, but generally it's less time if I have good music around and I don't get distracted by other shiny things), I need a lot of hours with music. Thing is, I found that I cannot concentrate if I can understand the lyrics. Like, listening to English and thinking on what to write in English is surprisingly hard (with a few exceptions, Coldplay being one, Eisley being another). So I tend to go for instrumental or songs in foreign languages, which, lucky for me, I love the genre of trip-hop, and most of that's European and so, lots of not too lyrical or non-English songs. Perfect, right?
Except because I use Spotify, I just stopped buying albums. There are artists that I've seen in concert and have listened to their albums hundreds of times, probably, and didn't purchase. Yeah so they get some money from listening to Spotify but I heard it's pretty minuscule. Plus, I should friggin' just BUY THE DAMN ALBUMS to support them! There are also artists who're NOT on Spotify that I just randomly listen to Bandcamp, and again, didn't buy their album until forever ago. I feel so guilty regardless! I get so many listens and I don't buy the goddamn album! Case in point: Kruder & Dorfmeister. Okay, they don't make it easy to buy their albums - because a lot of it's out of print and there's no preview (I generally don't buy stuff if I haven't heard it first), but now there is! And I heard the whole K&D Sessions on Youtube, and am listening to DJ Kicks right now on Bandcamp, and I was like this is amazing!! And I'm hesitating on the albums. So worth it. So good. My cheap ass so am not shilling out the 20 dollars needed to get both.
I really hate myself sometimes.
